Search Press is the leading art and craft publisher in the UK. It specializes in producing beautiful and practical books on knitting sewing, crocheting, needlecraft, textiles and general crafts for people of all skill levels. The company was founded in 1970, when Charlotte de la Bedoyere published her first book – Basket Weaving – in an attic room in Kensington. Translated from a German book, this was to be the first of many titles. The format was good, the thinking behind them simple, to publish small, reasonably priced books that were packed with practical information, offering crafters and needlecrafters new ideas and inspirational designs. Lotti, as she is known to everyone here at Search Press, went on include hot trends like pin and thread and candlemaking. The market loved them and so she continued, introducing full colour and a successful series of practical art books – the Leisure Arts.

    Matthes & Seitz is also now representing the world rights of two international authors: The French cult science-fiction author Alain DAMASIO and his two iconic novels (The Horde of the Counterwind, 500.000 copies sold, and The Furtives, 300.000 copies sold) and the American novelist Emily SEGAL with her first novel Mercury Retrograde (New York Times New and Notable Book 2020).

    The fiction list includes contemporary authors from Germany, like Frank Witzel (winner of the German Book Prize 2015), Anne Weber (winner of the German Book Prize 2020), Esther Kinsky, Angela Steidele, Philip Schönthaler, and Joshua Groß. Matthes & Seitz Berlin is not only known for German literature, but also for the translations of contemporary and classic French literature like Antonin Artaud, Emmanuel Carrère, Céline Minard and Éric Vuillard, the winner of the Prix Goncourt 2017. Among the strong list of Russian literature you find Warlam Schalamow, Iliazd, Alexander Ilitchevski and Alexander Goldstein.

    Non-fiction has always had a central place in Matthes & Seitz‘s program, especially philosophy, political theory, and art and cultural studies. Translations from the French and English play a large part, as do prominent German authors like Jürgen Goldstein (winner of the Leipzig Book Fair Prize 2016). The series Fröhliche Wissenschaft (The Joyful Wisdom), with its short essays, is a prominent stage for presenting audacious new philosophers. Its authors, who include Byung-chul Han and Marcus Steinweg, have been translated into numerous languages.

    In 2013 Matthes & Seitz Berlin established a new cornerstone in its program with the series Naturkunden (Natural Sciences), which publishes books whose design matches nature‘s beauty, bringing nature writing, movement, space, ecology, and humanity into focus. In order to stimulate German literary voices writing about nature Matthes & Seitz Berlin donates the „German Price for Nature Writing“.

    In 2020 Matthes & Seitz Berlin has taken over two other publishing houses as imprints: Friedenauer Presse, founded in 1963 and specialized in Russian literature, and the academic press August Verlag, founded in 2009.

    Ediciones Ekaré publishes books for children and young people. The name Ekaré was borrowed from the Pemón language, an ethnic group located in southeastern Venezuela. The word means “news” or “true narration”, and in a broader context, story or legend. Ediciones Ekaré was created in 1978 and its main goal, to publish quality children’s books, is directly related with the Banco del Libro’s experience in public libraries and school libraries; Banco del Libro is an internationally known Venezuelan institution for its reading promotion programs.

    Kunstanstifter Publishing House was founded in 2006. Its titles are hybrids of literature and art, for children and grown-up readers alike, often beyond established categories, with collector-quality and the highest artistic standards. Text and image enhance each other for an aesthetic unity. Kunstanstifter’s list is characterized by a novel blend of young talents, innovative voices, classical and contemporary authors of diverse cultural backgrounds. Each year eight to ten titles are published, from all genres including short stories, tales, cooking and travel books.

    In the last few years, it won numerous and prestigious awards including the German Design Award, the Joseph-Binder-Award in Gold, the German-French Youth Literature Prize, The Beauty and the Book Award, a nomination for the Serafina – a young talent award, and last but not least, the award of the German Youth Literature Prize.

    Coppenrath in Münster has a long tradition: in 1768 Josef Heinrich Coppenrath founded Coppenrath Verlag. For over two centuries the firm remained family-owned until the young graphic artist and publisher Wolfgang Hölker took it over in 1977. He gave the company a new direction with his innovative ideas.

    The list emphasised both children’s and gift/cookbooks. So arose children’s books of high graphic quality, which always include something special.

    Today, children’s and gift books are the backbone of this privately owned company with a programme for the production of ambitious books of high visual quality.     Kasmir promet was founded in 1993, and joined the publishing sector in 1998. Since then, over a hundred books for children and youth have been published.

    Original illustrations from Kasmirs picture books were bought by the Chihiro Art Museum in Japan for inclusion in its international exhibition. During EXPO 2005 in Hekinan, Japan, Kasmirs picture books were used in workshops in which the citizens of Japan could learn more about Croatian illustrations. In 2008, UNESCO used an illustration from one of Kasmirs picture books for a poster celebrating World Book and Author’s Rights Day.

    Kasmir´s picture books have received numerous national and international awards such as Grand Prix, BIB Gold Plaque and IBBY Diploma of Honor List. Already for years, our books are available in foreign countries.
