WBG was founded in 1949. Its aim then was to re-publish academic literature that had been destroyed or otherwise lost during the Second World War and make it once more available to the public. This project soon developed into a society for the promotion of science, education and culture – which is still WBG’s mission today. The range of products comprises more than 7.000 books and e-books and encompasses academic and research titles, textbooks for students, editions of works of classical literature, critical editions, reference works, biographies, as well as exhibition catalogues. The publications cover a variety of topics in the areas of History, Archeology, Classics, Geography, Natural Sciences, Modern Language Studies, Music, Art, Theology and Philosophy.
